Nomalism – Tell us about your project, how did it begin?
M – It began two months ago, although I’ve worked with handicrafts for quite some time now, although mostly personal projects but the idea of recycling furniture was my partner’s. Many people throw things away, the majority because they don’t know what to do with furnishings that have possibly outlived their time or become inutile. That’s why we decided to take a leap of faith and begin this little project of ours. Everything is restorable and reusable. I’ve always liked to transform objects that I wasn’t using anymore into new utilities for my home. I mean nobody uses their grandma’s doily nowadays, right? But imagine with this seemingly useless crochet we can do a million things – such as a curtain, a chandelier, a purse, a tablecloth, among many others. Furniture is the same story, it can be renovated into something completely different.
Nomalism – So your mission is to renew and recycle antiques? What about restoring them?
M – For now we are focused on the repair and reutilization of antique pieces of furniture. Restoring is a considerably specific talent that requires certain precautions and detailed techniques. The elevated responsibility in the restoration of highly valuable and/or historic pieces is something that we are not fully equipped for yet. It’s our job to consult with each client and advise them about the best options for their furnishing because we must preserve the classics. You don’t go painting over an “Art Deco” piece, your nuts if you do that, each transformation has its limitations. I’ve been in the business long enough, I paint, repair, consider new ways to give life to antiques or even how to adapt it to a new lifestyle. I’m a curious person that is continuously learning, developing my abilities and I’ve taught myself what is necessary to be successful in this area.
Nomalism – Why did you decide to take a famous phrase from one of our most prestigious writers, Fernando Pessoa, and turn it into the name of the company?
M - At the time it made sense, we are so connected to the past and history, always with the idea that “nothing is lost”, that you can transform everything. People create connections that last a lifetime with objects/furniture that remind them of their cherished grandparents or parents and because of this they want to hang onto those memories, so they opt to update them. We work in a field that is propagated by nostalgia.
Nomalism – How was the experience with your first customer?
M – Our first client was one of our neighbors from the hair salon that bought us some really nice shelfs to hang there. They had an old-fashioned, sort of a vintage vibe, and her salon is full of these type of objects, like radios and televisions. It was fun, I wasn’t expecting it and I really loved the support she gave us.
Nomalism – If I wanted to renew a piece of furniture what would I have to take into account?
M – The first objective is to reach the original, untreated wood of that piece. You’ll need to carefully remove all of the previous treatments, so you won’t damage the furnishing. Also you need to analyze the condition of the doors, hinges, and the iron to determine if they are durable or not. If it’s painted, you’ll need to evaluate the status as well in order to remove it with the best method. Basically, you need to understand the status of every single element of the furniture. Then you add in creativity and different ideas for each one. You can put fabrics on it, paint it a different color, or give it another type of finish, it’s all about the aesthetics.
Nomalism - How would you evaluate the market you are in?
M – The quality of furnishings today isn’t the same as it used to be, therefore all of the crafts are necessary. Half of the pieces I renew are 50 or 60 years old and if we do it correctly they can last another 50 to 60 years. People invest as they can, because repairing these type of objects isn’t always cheap as most people would imagine and sometimes buying something new can cost as much as renewing an old one. What many people do not realize is that the antiques that belonged to our parents, or grandparents often last even longer. The objective of most furniture is ultimately, organization, and that’s why there is such a big market for made to measure pieces. Today everything is possible and mixing antique pieces with modern is the norm.
Nomalism – Why did you choose to open your store in Campo de Ourique?
M – Campo de Ourique is a little neighborhood with everything, it offers great interior design materials, suppliers and is a rapidly growing market, and it’s ideal for a store like ours. We looked everywhere for a place to open but here we simply have the best conditions and are conveniently located. It took us a long time to find the right place but all good things take time and we’re very content with our decision. The neighborhood is lively with people everywhere, we were warmly welcomed into the vicinity. Older people live alongside the young and it has a great community vibe. The idea that we have gotten is that people like to see new stores opening that have the capability to grow and we believe we’re contributing to the neighborhood’s growth.

Nomalism - Conte-nos um pouco sobre o projeto, como surgiu?
M - O projeto começou há cerca de 2 meses, trabalhei em artes manuais durante muito tempo para projetos mais pessoais e a ideia da reciclagem de móveis veio também do meu sócio. Muita gente deita muitas coisas fora, outras não sabem o que fazer aos móveis que têm em casa e por isso decidimos que era hora de nos propormos a este desafio. Porque tudo é recuperável e reutilizável. Eu gosto da ideia de pegar no que já não tem utilidade, e dar-lhe uso através da transformação. O que é que fazemos com o naperon da avozinha? Já ninguém usa isso. Mas podemos fazer centenas de coisas, um cortinado, um candeeiro, uma carteira, uma toalha de mesa, entre outras coisas. Os móveis também são assim. A utilidade anterior de um móvel pode não ser exatamente a mesma, pode ser outra completamente diferente.
Nomalism – Então vocês aqui dedicam-se à reparação e reciclagem de antiguidades? E o restauro?
M – Para já só nos dedicamos à reparação e reciclagem porque o restauro é uma matéria muito séria que requer técnicas muito especificas de recuperação de móveis. Tintas, ferragens, tratamentos. Nós reparamos peças que não têm valor histórico, porque o restauro é um processo muito sério. Reparar e recuperar também exigem uma grande responsabilidade . Cabe-nos a nós aconselhar o cliente para o que é melhor para a peça, respeitar os clássicos também. Não se pinta uma peça “Art Deco” por exemplo, há que ter em conta que transformar também tem os seus limites. Há muito tempo que estou neste ofício. Desde que me lembro que gosto de não deitar nada fora e de lhes dar uma nova utilidade. Pinto, reparo, penso em novas formas de adaptar uma peça à minha vida ou á vida das pessoas. Aprendi e sempre tive a curiosidade de aprender mais sobre a reparação de mobiliário, assim como no futuro ter capacidades e habilidades para fazer restauro apresentando o antes e depois e fazendo a ficha técnica.
Nomalism – Porquê adaptar uma célebre frase de Fernando Pessoa “Nada se perde tudo se transforma” ao nome da empresa?
M – Na altura havia a ideia de passado, pela história, havia sempre a ideia de que “nada se perde” e assim ficou, sempre com a ideia de que “tudo se transforma”. No início “Nada se perde” só não podia ser porque já havia um café com esse nome, então ficamos com a frase toda. As pessoas são muito ligadas aos móveis dos avós, dos pais, há sempre nostalgia envolvida no processo de reparação e transformação de uma peça.
Nomalism – Como é que foi a experiência com o primeiro cliente?
M – A minha primeira cliente foi aqui a vizinha da rua, do cabeleireiro, que me comprou umas prateleiras para colocar no salão, que é decorado com objetos antigos, como rádios, televisões. Foi muito engraçado, não estava nada à espera e gostei muito de receber o carinho dela e apoio.
Nomalism – Quais são os principais fatores a ter em conta quando se pretende reparar um móvel?
M – O principal quando se repara é ter noção que tem se de chegar à madeira original, ou seja, remover qualquer tipo de tratamento aplicado, com muito cuidado para não danificar nada. Ver o estado das portas, das dobradiças, das ferragens do móvel para saber se tem sustentabilidade ou não. Se está pintado ou não, quanto tempo tem a tinta. No fundo é ter a noção do estado de conservação do móvel. Depois junta-se a criatividade e ideia de cada um. Juntam-se tecidos, pinta-se de uma cor ou várias, opta-se por outro tipo de acabamento, neste caso já é uma questão estética.
Nomalism – Como considera que está o mercado em que se encontra?
M – A qualidade dos móveis dos dias de hoje não é a mesma, e todos os ofícios são necessários. Metade das peças que tenho aqui têm 50 ou 60 anos, e se forem bem reparados duram outros 50 e 60 anos. As pessoas apostam em investimentos consoante o que podem investir, porque reparar não é propriamente barato, é um investimento no fundo e ás vezes tem o mesmo preço que um móvel novo. As pessoas ainda não têm a consciência da durabilidade das peças que têm em casa ou das que estão em casa dos pais ou da avó. Há a necessidade de arrumação quando se fala de móveis, bem como à a necessidade de peças feitas à medida. Reparar é a associação de decoração e utilização. E hoje em dia é possível conjugar peças antigas e novas numa decoração.
Nomalism – E porque é que escolheram o Bairro de Campo de Ourique?
M – Campo de Ourique é uma aldeia com tudo, tem uma oferta fantástica a nível de decoração de interiores e um mercado em crescimento, por isso para nós foi e é ótimo. Essencialmente escolhemos o bairro pelo espaço que conseguimos, que é grande e muito adaptável ao que fazemos. Demoramos muito tempo a encontrar algo que nos agradasse. O Bairro é amoroso, as pessoas têm uma vida muito movimentada, é muito seguro, e acho que tem uma vida muito própria porque conseguiu juntar e aliar o envelhecimento e o estatuto familiar ao crescimento da ocupação jovem nos bairros de Lisboa. Tivemos uma excelente recepção por parte de todos. A ideia que temos é que as pessoas gostam de ver portas abertas no bairro e que este continua a crescer e nós acreditamos que estamos a contribuir para esse crescimento.
